Trane Recalls Air Conditioning Systems Due to Shock Hazard (Recall Alert)
This recall involves 37 models of Trane XB300 and American Standard brand Silver SI split system outdoor cooling units. The units are gray and have a black grated front. The units were sold in two sizes: 25.5 inches deep by 23.5 inches wide by 28.83 inches tall and 28.83 inches deep by 28.48 inches wide by 29.28 inches tall. The Trane or American Standard logo is affixed to the front and model numbers are printed on the silver nameplate on the back of the unit. CPSC, American Standard Companies Announce Recall of Gas-Electric Heating/Cooling Units
The recalled units include 2- through 5-ton Trane and American Standard heating and air conditioning packaged units. Affected units are combination gas heat and air conditioning systems installed outdoors only. Gas furnaces installed indoors are not included in this recall. The units have identification plates displaying the model number; serial number; and the year, month and day of manufacture. The plate is located on one end of the unit. The first four digits of all serial numbers indicate the year, fiscal week and day of manufacture. The recall includes: - All units with model numbers beginning with YCP or YCX and having serial numbers beginning with 3383 through 4475; - All units with model number beginning with YCY or YCZ and having serial numbers beginning with 4282 through 4475.
CPSC, American Standard Companies Announce Recall of Trane and American Standard Accessory Electric Heaters
The 240-volt accessory heaters are used to provide supplemental heat in the heat pump or electric heating system. The accessory heater - model number BAYHTR1415BRKAC manufactured between April 14, 2003 and February 6, 2004 - is located inside the air handler cabinet usually found in the basement, attic, equipment closet or crawlspace of a consumer's home. The horizontally or vertically installed air handler is a painted metal cabinet with the Trane or American Standard name plate on its front. Air handler model numbers are found on the outside of the air handler door. Consumers with one of the recalled units are being directly contacted by the independent dealer that installed it. If you had a Trane or American Standard heat pump or electric heating system installed between April 2003 and February 2004, and have not yet been contacted by your installer, write down your air handler model number and call your installer to see whether your air handler could contain a recalled heater. You may also visit the firm's website to see whether your air handler could contain one of the recalled heaters and, if so, call your installer. To avoid electric shock, do not open the air handler door. Only a professional installer should open the air handler door to determine if you have a recalled accessory heater.

The Voyager series of light commercial rooftop air conditioners with electric cooling and gas-fired heat exchangers, which are installed in schools and commercial applications, have 120,000 to 135,00 BTU heating capacity and three- to five-ton cooling capacity in horizontal and downflow configurations. The Voyager series has been manufactured by Trane since 1988 and is distributed under the Trane® and American Standard® brand names. The recalled units were manufactured between June 1, 2000 and August 16, 2000 and have serial numbers beginning with R21 through and including R33. Announce Recall of Home Heating and Air Conditioning Components WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Trane Company, of Tyler, Texas, a division of American Standard Inc., is voluntarily recalling 9,900 accessory electric heaters. These heaters are used to provide supplemental heat in heat pump or electric heating systems. Whether in the cooling, fan, heating or off mode, incorrectly routed wires can cause the accessory heater to continually cycle on and off. Excessive heat could catch nearby combustibles on fire. Trane and American Standard are aware of four reports of heaters continually running. No property damage or injuries were reported. These auxiliary electric heaters were sold as a component in various models of Trane and American Standard brand air handlers for heating and air conditioning systems. The air handler is the indoor component of the consumer's air conditioning or heating system. The air handler is a painted metal cabinet, which has the Trane or American Standard nameplate on its front. The nameplate provides a list of accessory electric heater model numbers that could be installed in that air handler. The model numbers for the recalled units are BAYHTR1419A and B. CPSC, Manufacturers Announce Recall Program to Replace Vent Pipes on Home Heating Systems WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a landmark action, virtually the entire furnace and boiler industry together with the manufacturers of high-temperature plastic vent (HTPV) pipes have joined with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to announce a recall program. This program will replace, free of charge, an estimated 250,000 HTPV pipe systems attached to gas or propane furnaces or boilers in consumers' homes. The HTPV pipes could crack or separate at the joints and leak carbon monoxide (CO), presenting a deadly threat to consumers. CO is a colorless, odorless gas produced by incomplete burning of carbon-based fuel, including natural gas and propane. The initial symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to the flu, and may include dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea and irregular breathing. High-level exposure to CO can cause death. To determine whether they have HTPV pipe systems that are subject to this program, consumers should first check the vent pipes attached to their natural gas or propane furnaces or boilers. Vent pipes subject to this recall program can be identified as follows: the vent pipes are plastic; the vent pipes are colored gray or black; and the vent pipes have the names "Plexvent ," "Plexvent II" or "Ultravent " stamped on the vent pipe or printed on stickers placed on pieces used to connect the vent pipes together. Consumers should now check the location of these vent pipes. For furnaces, only HTPV systems that have vent pipes that go through the sidewalls of structures (horizontal systems) are subject to this program. For boilers, all HTPV systems are subject to this program. Other plastic vent pipes, such as white PVC or CPVC, are not involved in this program. After checking the vent pipes, consumers should call the special toll-free number (800) 758-3688, available between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. EST seven days a week, to verify that their HTPV pipe systems are subject to this recall program. Consumers with eligible systems will receive new, professionally installed venting systems free of charge. Additionally, consumers who already have replaced their HTPV pipe systems may be eligible for reimbursement for some or all of the replacement costs. The program came about as a result of mediation among 27 participants manufacturers of HTPV pipes and manufacturers of natural gas or propane-fired boilers and mid-efficiency furnaces. This is the first time that CPSC has used a mediator to bring together all segments of an industry to implement a program for the benefit of consumers. All consumers should have their fuel-burning appliances inspected each year to check for cracks or separations in the vents that could allow CO to leak into the home. In addition, CPSC recommends that every home should have at least one CO detector that meets the requirements of the most recent Underwriters Laboratories 2034 standard or International Approval Services 6-96 standard. Preway and Arkla Furnaces Correction NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 17, 1988 Release # 88-006 Plan for High Efficiency Furnaces WASHINGTON, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Arkla, Inc., of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Preway Industries of Evansville, Indiana, today announced they would implement a corrective action program for 60,000 high efficiency gas furnaces manufactured by Arkla and Preway and sold nationwide. The Corrective action program was developed by the two manufacturers in response to 387 complaints from owners that their furnaces have experienced internal corrosion. Such corrosion could allow dangerous carbon monoxide to pass into the living areas of the home. Among the complaints of internal corrosion, are eight complaints of nausea. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, but toxic gas which, in large amounts, can cause illness or death. Signs of carbon monoxide poisoning are flu-like symptoms -- headache, nausea, stomach upset and drowsiness. Over a period of time, the corrosion may cause the metal in some of the furnace components to deteriorate, and can progress to the point where holes can be created through which carbon monoxide could be released into the home. Subsequent testing has shown affected furnaces to be susceptible to corrosion when exposed to chlorine- or fluorine- containing compounds -- including salt for melting ice, paint stripper, fabric or water softener, bleach and adhesives -- found in some homes. Homeowners should not store or use such products near these furnaces. As part of the corrective action program, Preway and Arkla will inspect the furnaces at no charge. Based on the inspections, they will retrofit furnaces with an upgrade kit at no charge, or if the corrosion is very severe, will replace furnaces on a pro rata basis. Furnaces covered under this plan were manufactured by Arkla and Preway and were sold by the companies listed at the bottom of the page. Arkla and Preway are also continuing an earlier corrective program which includes the replacement of the external vents of furnaces covered by the plan due to corrosion. There have been 2,036 complaints of corrosion and seven allegations of carbon monoxide-related symptoms attributed to corrosion of the external vents of these furnaces.
